Toy Story
3: Scene analysis 1 – Meeting count Olaf : The first impression.
Music:
The music in this scene is odd and very mysterious when they
are driving into the house lots of screeching noises high pitch to mysterious
minor chords. Pizzicato, Violins and screeching string instruments and
percussion instruments. It starts out quiet and builds as they get a tour
around the house.
This music creates a scary, mysterious, odd vibe. Giving a
creepy feel, very dark and evil. The kids find him weird and different, also
lots of suspense.
This creates the feel that he is evil and he is weird and scary
and very intimidating. We think he is bad and wants to harm the children. This
sets the plot in motion telling us that the kids don’t feel comfortable in his
possession and their first impression of him was right that he’s evil and
dangerous.
Costume & props
He is tall wearing dark clothing and very long clothing. The
colours are all cold not hot and warm or inviting. They are quite broad and
wide not fat but very dramatic. Yet slightly ripped but very posh, old and
warn. The castle is old and the rooms are dark. The walls are tall long grey
and mouldy.
This gives us the impression that he is a proper dark
mysterious evil and bad. Looks like he is dangerous someone that you wouldn’t
approach in a dark alley way. This gives us a creepy feel like an evil castle
for an evil person, it matches him the castle.
Count is shown like this to make us think he is evil which he
is and give us the impression that he has lots of power and he is bad and
creepy. It makes us feel uncomfortable and very uninvited as well as
intimidated.
Lighting
He is appearing out of little window light and
light shining through the high windows going up the walls it dims around him
and it gets lighter around the
children
We then think he is bad with the dimmed light
and the children are good. That his house is full of darkness and not much
light is allowed to show through because he is so bad. This tells us that he is
evil and should not be near the kids.
This is used to make the audience think that he
is bad and he is not a good person to be around and darkness surrounds him.
That the kids are better than him and he is not going to turn out good
throughout the story.
Camera angles
Over the shoulder of Count Olaf looking from up
high down onto the kids. From below over the kids shoulders looking up at Count
Olaf
Looking down over his shoulder it gives us this
makes him looks bigger than the kids. Looking up over the kids shoulder makes
him look tall and menacing
This gives us the impression that he has power
over them and he has the most authority. It tells us he is controlling and has
lots and lots of power even over the
authorities.
Linking
What overall impression does this scene give
about a character? How does it develop the character? This gives us the
impression that Count Olaf is bad and dangerous he is bossy has authority is
evil and rather creepy. He is possessive and
unpredictable.
That first impressions can usually be right. Because our first impression is that he is creepy and scary. Which throughout the story is true, he is Evil.
This tells us that we must learn to sometimes
judge a book by its cover and try to be open about it but still keep the first
impression in the back of your mind. It usually relates to if someone says
something bad to you first off you usually don’t trust them as much,
